Michael Shakespeare

Michael Shakespeare studied violin making at the London College of Furniture in the late 1970s under Patricia Naismith. He was then fortunate to be employed at J.P. Guivier, one of the oldest surviving violin houses in the West End of London. He worked here for almost ten years and gained valuable experience restoring many of the fine instruments which constantly passed through the workshop.

Upon leaving Guivier's he set up his own workshop, first in East London and later in Blackheath, South London, where he has worked for the past 23 years.

His work is very highly regarded both as a maker and restorer with instruments in several major London orchestras. His violins have also sold abroad to both professionals and students.

Michael is also a principal restorer for the workshop of Sean Bishop of Bishop's Instruments and Bows where his violins can be seen in the Marylebone showroom. He works for Sean on the finest instruments for an international clientele.

As well as making and repairing, Michael also buys and sells instruments suitable for both students and professionals having restored them to excellent playing condition.
